Absence……

The L word…LOVE….is tossed around so easily..there is no connection with the words coming from our mouths….and love in my opinion has been turned into a bad thing….twisted..scorched…and made to be a bad thing….

God is ultimate love…love on a level we can barely touch upon..by choice…

We gleefully read the John 3:16 scripture that brings about the words..”For God so loved the world, that He gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish, yet have eternal life.”

God loved us..you…me…the guy on the corner..the one that makes you angry…the child we are weary dealing with…the parent we do not want…those people…and you and me….

Loved us so much…not because we had a great job….not because we sure look good in that dress and we are the perfect size 4….

Not because we are smart…..or in honesty have much to offer God..when it is in our twisted guidelines…

But God loved us so much…that He gave his son…the most valuable thing ever…and those are inadequate words….

Imagine the love God must have for his son…can you eek out a bit of that feeling…?

God loved me..so much that He gave what was precious…so we would gain..we would thrive..

It is not conditional…no hidden fees..no contracts to sign..a simple movement of the heart..a choice…

So loving someone is simple..it is not by force…or confusing like a calculus problem that goes on for pages…

What is the most valuable to us..?

Our home..our car..our job..our designer phone..our pride..our being right….?

Because it does not seem to be the things God says are of value….

The things we love seem to follow in a certain pattern…

We tell a child we love them…and then tell them..to choose between mommy and daddy…and we teach them that love is wounding another so they can barely breath…ummm…I think they call it tough love..and it is for their best…they should have known better than to wrangle with you…..is that not what we call it…?

We tell our spouse to stay out of church with us..over and over again….and tell them it is okay to take a break from God…He understands…I mean you are with your spouse…the one God gave you to love…right…?

Love shows up for all the party events….and says I do this because I love you….yet when food is low..or we are bedraggled…and hungry…or need to teach our children the truth..through examples…suddenly one has a list longer than I got time for….

Love does not ask another to lie..wound…cheat…

Love keeps a commitment…and honors what one has been given…

God so loved the world…

God asks us to move toward him…

God asks us to look at what we love…

What is it that we love..? And why is it that we love it…?

I can say I love you till I pass out…

Yet if I ask another to step away from God…play the game of hiding the illness…and pointing the finger at everyone else…

I do not love…

I am the absence of love..which is the absence of God…

Evil disguised…..oh look…we think it is love…..

One Response to “Absence……”

  1. Very profound and very close to what much wiser men in the first century believed. Athanasius will imply that evil is everything God did NOT create because it was void of love and to sin is to move away from our true selves into nothingness because evil and sin are just basically nothing since they are not love. I think our ability to love, in spite of pain is probably the most profound act of faith and it makes the angels stand in wide eyed wonder…we who have never been in the Presence of God who is perfect love…yet somehow in spite of all contradiction we lean into love past the pain…I appreciate your raw unbridled honesty it is glorious and a breath of fresh air in our age of masks.
